Today, they are highly collectible and used frequently among military clubs for reenactments and convoy tours! The Ford factory was far better equipped at production at this scale, and faithfully produced the GPW jeep with fully interchangeable parts. Ford would join forces with Willys to build their patented jeep, but under its own model series called GPW. Although, with the Willys MB in full production, it failed to meet the massive demand necessary to fulfill the military request. ![]() The small ¼-ton 4-wheel-drive contract was awarded to Willys for their design meeting these stringent requirements, beating out Ford, mostly for their powerful 60 horsepower engine. Production vehicles would need to be small & lightweight for easier transport, maneuverable enough to manage a variety of roadways, and efficient enough to utilize and/or tow multiple accessories. With the beginning of World War II, the United States War Department took to production equipment for its military personnel to win the war overseas.
